Maggie McDermott

Maggie McDermott is a family law attorney at The Harris Law Firm who brings 14 years of legal experience and real compassion to every client she serves. With a background in immigration law, such as cases that involved affirmative family-based applications, removal defense, asylum, VAWA applications, and U visa applications, Maggie developed an understanding of the legal challenges families face and a genuine commitment to helping vulnerable people navigate complex legal systems. That foundation translates naturally into family law and divorce, where the stakes often feel equally high, and the need for a skilled, compassionate attorney is just as essential.

Maggie was drawn to the legal profession by two passions that the law allowed her to pursue together: a desire to advocate for people in difficult circumstances and a love of writing. A Colorado native, she grew up in Louisville.

At CU Boulder, Maggie earned a BA in History and a BS in Journalism simultaneously, graduating with distinction and earning a place on the dean's list for all eight semesters. She received scholarships from the Denver Women's Press Club, the Don Ridgeway/CHSPA program, and the University of Colorado Alumni Association, and served as Editor-in-Chief of The Campus Press during her time at CU. She went on to earn her JD from California Western School of Law, where she was named to the Dean's Honor List for four semesters and received Academic Achievement Awards in five subjects: Family Law, Criminal Procedure, Constitutional Law II, Legal Research and Writing, and International Law. She was the recipient of both the Academic Merit Scholarship and the Creative Problem Solving Scholarship, served as a senior editor for the California Western Law Review and International Law Review, and was a member of the Pro Bono Honors Society and the Supreme Court Historical Society. During law school, she also participated in the Chile Summer Abroad Program in Santiago de Chile and volunteered with the California Western Community Law Project, providing legal services to indigent clients in San Diego.

Maggie believes that the foundation of any successful attorney-client relationship is communication, and that the most important thing a client can feel is that they are truly being heard. She approaches every matter with genuine curiosity about each client's circumstances, asking the right questions and building the kind of trust that allows people to feel at ease. She is committed to keeping clients informed throughout the legal process, so they understand what to expect at every stage and feel prepared for any outcome. For Maggie, being a strong advocate means being an honest person for her clients and a confident voice on their behalf.

Maggie is married and has two sons, ages 11 and 13. Most weekends find her at basketball or soccer games cheering them on. As a family, they enjoy traveling, staying active together, and attending live music shows. In her own time, Maggie enjoys reading and exercise.

Peter was thoughtful, strategic, and highly effective!

I had the opportunity to work with Peter Goldstein as the financial expert retained on behalf of the husband in a family law matter. Peter was thoughtful, strategic, and highly effective throughout the case.

He demonstrated strong judgment, excellent communication skills, and a deep understanding of the issues involved. We achieved a favorable outcome, and I would not hesitate to recommend Peter to others seeking experienced family law counsel.
