    Richard A. Harris

    For more than 30 years, Richard A. Harris has devoted his practice exclusively to family law, representing families, professional athletes, and business owners in complex divorce, custody, and complex financial matters while serving as Managing Partner of The Harris Law Firm. Known for his strategic advocacy and steady leadership, his work has earned peer-review recognitions such as Best Lawyers in America and Super Lawyers.

    A significant portion of his practice focuses on international family law, where he handles sophisticated cross-border disputes involving custody, divorce, and parental rights. Rich is highly skilled in navigating multi-jurisdictional legal systems, including matters governed by the Hague Convention, and is adept at resolving cases involving international child abduction, foreign assets, and cross-border marital agreements, providing comprehensive, end-to-end representation that protects clients’ interests while addressing the legal, cultural, and logistical complexities of global family law matters.

    Rich’s passion for family law began when he earned his Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from the University of Southern California (USC). His studies taught him how to clearly and precisely negotiate complex issues between parties. He used these skills at the Sturm College of Law at the University of Denver, where he earned his Juris Doctor. Born and raised in New York, Rich is now a proud Coloradan who is truly dedicated to helping families throughout the state with their legal matters.

    Mr. Harris has contributed significantly to legal scholarship and practitioner education. He is a co-author of the Colorado Family Law Deskbook and has presented seminars and written extensively on advanced family law topics. Within his firm, he leads continuing education initiatives that train attorneys on evolving legal policies as well as the psychological dimensions of client advocacy, reinforcing both technical excellence and client-centered representation. The Harris Law Firm developed an innovative WeCare℠ Program, which provides clients access to a non-billable support professional throughout their case. In addition, he has fostered a collaborative firm culture in which attorneys mentor one another and regularly consult on cases, ensuring clients benefit from collective insight and that legal strategies reflect more than the experience of a single attorney.

    Rich has cultivated a culture of compassion and advocacy at The Harris Law Firm, encouraging and supporting attorneys in giving back both within the legal profession and throughout the community. Through the years the firm’s attorneys have contributed more than 3,500 hours of pro bono service, helping bridge the justice gap for under-resourced communities.

    In March 2019, the firm launched Birthday Boxes, an initiative supporting children at Horizons Colorado, a nonprofit advancing educational equity for under-resourced youth. Through the program, employees “adopt” a birthday child and use a $150 firm-funded budget to fulfill that child’s birthday wishes, with the firm donating 10–15 boxes each month.

    Under Rich’s mentorship, many attorneys also lead and present CLE programs, serve on nonprofit boards, and participate in volunteer opportunities supported by the firm, reflecting a shared belief that community engagement is not optional, but a professional responsibility.

    Rich's professional service includes active involvement with the Colorado Bar Association and board service with the Colorado Lawyers Committee, reflecting a longstanding commitment to advancing the profession and expanding access to justice. Through litigation, scholarship, mentorship, and program development, his career demonstrates sustained leadership dedicated to strengthening family law practice and professional standards.

    Humanitarian Work

    Rich supports many international and domestic humanitarian organizations and causes. He co-founded The Road to Hope, a non-profit organization committed to developing Haiti’s infrastructure and investing in the nation’s children. He is a board member of the Colorado Lawyers Committee, which is devoted to protecting the legal rights of children and the underprivileged throughout Colorado.
